Why prep work is important

The Importance of Prep Work in Residential Painting

A fresh coat of paint can brighten any home or commercial space, adding value and a clean look. But if you want a quality paint job that will last, it takes more than just slapping some paint on your walls and calling it good. Proper surface prep is essential to a long-lasting, smooth finish that’s worth your time and money.

The proper preparation is the cornerstone of any quality painting job and can make or break your finished product. In fact we would say 85 percent of a paint job is in the prep work and if you try to cut corners here, you’re going to end up with less than desirable results.

Covering surfaces, taping, and removing electrical switches and light fixtures are just some of the necessary steps that we, as professional painters, take to prepare your home or business for paint. This ensures that the paint adheres to the surface, and it provides a protective barrier against weather conditions, dirt, and general wear and tear. It can even reduce the need for frequent repainting and maintenance.

An important step to take includes making sure to cover the floor (to prevent drips) and any other trim around windows or doors. This protects these areas from the paint and ensures that the final product is as beautiful as possible.

If you have wood trim in your home that needs repair, it’s a great idea to sand it and prime it before painting to protect against rot and ensure a clean, even finish. If you notice any loose nails that have popped out of the wood, you’ll want to hammer them back in so they don’t become exposed and prone to damage.

You’ll also want to take the time to cover floors and furniture in the room you’re painting with a sheet, tarp, or plastic cover to protect them from paint spatter. It’s also a good idea to remove any vent, light, or switch covers that are affixed to the wall, as these can be difficult to reach and paint around without removing them.

Finally, it’s a good idea to caulk any cracks or crevices in the surface you’re painting to seal the area and keep moisture from damaging the wood. This will help your new paint to last longer and keep your home better insulated and more energy efficient. It’s a small amount of work, but it can make a huge difference in the quality of your finished product.
